Things I find incredibly chic (postpartum edition)
10:07pm on Sunday night and my husband and I are both silently procrastinating the bath and bedtime routine for our almost 10 week old baby. She’s been great all day, to be fair. Minimal crying, more sleepy than usual, and so today has been a nice little rest before a busy week.
We have family coming to visit for a few days. The first visit of many this summer. We are officially in June and I’m excited for our first summer with little Louise. Also, I may have went overboard ordering new clothes for her as she is about to size up to 3-6 months (HOW!)… but I’m excited to play dress up once the warmer weather strikes eventually.
In an attempt to keep this newsletter semi-regular while trying to raise a tiny human for the first time, I’ve put together a funny little round up of the things I find incredibly chic postpartum. In a previous life, I might have referred to things like a luxury fragrance or pair of jeans. But now, a few months into motherhood, things have changed.
First up, coffee. My morning coffee is sacred and I WILL drink it hot. Whether that means drinking my first sip at 11:30am like this morning or chugging it while I hear a baby starting to fuss. The coffee is hot. Non negotiable! Grateful we invested in a good coffee machine a few years ago. Aside from the washing machine and robot hoover, it’s the hardest working thing in the house and the source of much of our happiness.
Eating an entire meal without being interrupted is a RARE occurrence in my household these days. Typically my husband and I eat in shifts or one of us is bouncing Louise in her BabyBjorn. I’m almost certain I’ve eaten a few meals start to finish without interference. Surely, I have… and when I do, it feels like fine dining. Bonus points if I’ve showered and am wearing something other than pyjamas.
I’ve become a sweet treat before bed kind of person and I’m not mad about it. If it’s a Ben & Jerry’s situation? Even more chic.
I can’t stop writing about how game changing finding comfortable, yet polished, outfits have been for me postpartum. Getting dressed does NOT happen every day. Most days I’m wearing sweatpants unless we’re going out somewhere. But dressing up a few times a week is doable, boosts my confidence a bit, and is very affirming. Chic as it gets.
Staying on the subject of clothes, when I dress Louise in anything other than baby grows, I feel like a walking Pinterest photo. Smug, even. Now that she’s getting a little older, I’m trying to dress her up when we leave the house to go anywhere (if I have the time and mental capacity). I’m enjoying finding her style — maybe I should start an Indyx digitised wardrobe for her? I kid, I kid…
This rainy weather is getting in the way of all my dreamy summer walks outside in the sunshine. But when the weather permits, getting outside walking helps my mood so much. What’s more chic than some fresh air when you’re in the newborn trenches?
This last one is hard to come by, but when a contact nap goes a little too long and you’re able to successfully transfer baby into their bed without waking them? You feel like the chic-est parent that ever parented. Side note: thanks to this internet trend, I now feel like the word “chic” has lost all meaning.
Some of these things happen every day, others happen most days, and some barely happen at all. But those are a few little ways I can romanticise these early days as a new mom.
Oh, and getting a full eight hours of sleep would also be incredibly chic. But somehow, I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon…
Thanks for reading Keep This In Mind. If you enjoyed this newsletter, I’d truly appreciate it if you subscribed, liked, shared, or left a comment. You being here means so much to me!

Melissa, this was a delightful read!!!! My youngest is turning 8 in a few months, so I haven't been in the newborn trenches in a long time, but WOW I could not agree more with every single item on this list. Absolutely, 100% THE most chic 😂🙌🏼 Especially the hot coffee and getting dressed in something that makes you feel semi-human... 💗
How is she already 10 weeks!!! And with you on the coffee in the morning! I invested in a good coffee machine just before getting pregnant, and it’s SO nice in the morning!
